Ring Size Guide (India)

By the Seraphaé team · Updated August 2026

Ring sizing is where most online jewellery purchases go wrong, and it is entirely avoidable. Five minutes with a piece of string will get you closer than guessing ever will.

Method 1: measure your finger with string

  1. Cut a strip of paper about 6 mm wide, or take a length of non-stretchy string.
  2. Wrap it snugly around the base of the finger you intend to wear the ring on — snug, not tight enough to indent the skin.
  3. Mark where the end overlaps, then lay it flat and measure the length in millimetres.
  4. That measurement is your finger circumference. Match it to the chart below.

Measure at the end of the day, when fingers are at their largest, and take the measurement two or three times to confirm.

Method 2: measure a ring you already own

Take a ring that fits the correct finger well. Measure the inside diameter in millimetres, edge to edge across the widest point. Multiply that diameter by 3.14 to get the circumference, then use the chart. This method is usually the more accurate of the two.

Indian sizes run on a numeric scale where each step is roughly 1 mm of circumference. Most adult women in India wear between size 12 and 16; most adult men between 20 and 24.

The knuckle problem

If your knuckle is noticeably larger than the base of your finger, measure both. The ring has to pass over the knuckle but should not spin freely at the base. Choose a size between the two measurements, leaning toward the knuckle measurement — a ring that will not go on is useless, while a slightly loose one can be adjusted.

Things that change your ring size

Because of all this, measure on a normal day at a normal temperature — not immediately after a workout or a long flight.

Band width matters

A wide band feels tighter than a narrow one at the same nominal size, because it covers more of the finger. As a rule of thumb, for bands wider than about 6 mm, go up a half to a full size from your usual measurement.

Adjustable and open rings

Many demi-fine rings are made deliberately open or adjustable, with a small gap that can be gently eased wider or narrower. These solve the sizing problem almost entirely and are an excellent choice when buying online or as a gift.

To adjust one: hold the band, not the decorative front, and ease it open or closed slowly with gentle, even pressure. Do not flex it repeatedly back and forth — metal fatigues, and repeated bending is the most common way an adjustable ring breaks.

Buying a ring as a gift

If you cannot measure their finger directly, the reliable options in order are: borrow a ring they already wear on the intended finger and measure its inside diameter; ask a friend or family member who knows; choose an adjustable style; or choose a different piece entirely. Necklaces and earrings carry no sizing risk, which is why they make safer gifts.

As a rough fallback, size 12–14 covers a large share of adult women in India, but treat that as a last resort rather than a plan.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure my ring size at home in India?

Wrap a strip of paper or non-stretchy string snugly around the base of your finger, mark where it overlaps, and measure the length in millimetres. That circumference maps directly to an Indian ring size — around 51.8 mm is size 12, 54 mm is size 14.

What is the average ring size for women in India?

Most adult women in India wear between Indian size 12 and 16 (roughly 51–56 mm circumference, US 6 to 7.75). Most adult men wear between size 20 and 24.

Should I size up for a wide band ring?

Yes. A wide band covers more of the finger and feels tighter at the same nominal size. For bands wider than about 6 mm, go up half a size to a full size.

How do I adjust an adjustable ring safely?

Hold the band rather than the decorative front and ease it open or closed slowly with gentle, even pressure. Avoid flexing it repeatedly — repeated bending fatigues the metal and is the most common cause of breakage.
