The pearls we use
Freshwater pearls are grown in mussels and are genuinely organic — which is why no two are identical in shape or lustre, and why they have a soft depth that manufactured beads never quite reach. Mother-of-pearl is the iridescent inner lining of the shell, cut and polished into shapes; it has the same subtle rainbow shift and is more robust than a whole pearl, which makes it excellent for everyday pieces.
Why pearls suit Indian dressing
Pearls sit comfortably across registers in a way few materials do. A pearl stud reads as appropriate in a formal office, at a wedding, and with a plain kurta on a Sunday. They pair naturally with both gold and white metal tones, and they flatter every skin tone — which is why pearl sets remain the most common jewellery gift for mothers and mothers-in-law across India.
Pearls need gentler care than metal
This is the one material where the usual advice is not enough. Pearls are organic and porous, so they are far more vulnerable than stones:
- Never soak pearls and never use an ultrasonic cleaner — both cause permanent damage.
- Keep perfume, hairspray and cosmetics off them. Alcohol dulls the nacre irreversibly.
- Wipe with a soft, barely damp cloth after wear, then dry immediately.
- Store separately from harder stones, which will scratch the surface.
- Do not store in an airtight box long-term — pearls need a little ambient moisture or they can dry and craze.
